Wekiva River Kayaking

Last Saturday I had a fantastic time Kayaking down the Wekiva River – plenty of wildlife, perfect weather, and great company. We started at King’s Landing and ended at Wekiva Island, which was about 8 1/2 miles. It was 2 miles farther than the longest stretch I’ve paddled, but this was all downstream so it wasn’t bad at all. Plus it was a very scenic journey with interesting animals and lush vegetation.

(I know… horrible photo)

She was munching on lily pads (who knew deer eat lily pads!) deercloseup2

We saw several gators, too – most of them were small. gator1

It doesn’t look like it in the photo, but this gator was huge! We saw him as we came around a corner and wow what a surprise. The water was very shallow too, so I was taking a bit of a risk trying to photograph him. I didn’t stay long.

Jim was an awesome paddle buddy; without the intriguing conversation my arms might have noticed the 8 1/2 miles we travelled. Fun day!
